Herpes Outbreaks: Symptoms of a Herpes Outbreak

Herpes outbreaks can be a painful and embarrassing part of life. It is possible however, that with understanding and self care, symptoms can be minimized or even eliminated. The symptoms of herpes can be best understood through an explanation of the stages of herpes and what happens during a herpes outbreak.

Genital herpes is most often – almost always – transmitted through sexual activity. After you have contracted HSV2, it can lie dormant in the ganglia at the base of your spine for months or even years.  Some people never experience the symptoms of herpes. While the virus lies dormant – in the ganglia of nerves at the base of your spine – your immune system cannot detect it and this is what makes genital herpes a lifetime virus. Vaginal herpes has no cure.
Once the virus is triggered – and there is not yet any scientific understanding of exactly what triggers herpes outbreaks (suspects are extended levels of stress, unresolved anger, excessive friction at the outbreak site, ultraviolet light, imbalance of lysine/arginine levels) – the virus becomes active, traveling along the nerves in and around your pelvic region (think: path of least resistance).  This begins the possible first symptoms of tingling, intense itching and slight burning at the potential outbreak site.

Almost immediately, your body will detect the herpes virus and begin to fight it. You can sense this is true by the immune fighting responses your body will experience, such as swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, headaches, and possibly fever. Quite often, with a little help, your immune system can lessen the severity of the herpes symptoms or even possibly abort it. Possible supplements to boost your immune system could be Vitamin C, oil of oregano Vitamin E, or even live enzymes.

If and when the herpes outbreak fully develops, a lesion or sore, or a cluster of bumps can develop on the body.  Many people report significant variations in both the severity and duration of herpes outbreaks. The symptoms of slight burning and intense itching for several days have been reported as very common.

As the outbreak starts to heal you will feel a lessening in symptoms (swelling, pain, redness) and a crust may form over the sore or outbreak to protect the new skin forming underneath.It is vital that you not interfere with the healing outbreak in any way. It is most common for the symptoms of herpes to leave no effects of scarring or pain after complete healing has occurred.
